About Ocean City
Ocean City originated as a borough on May 3, 1884, from portions of Upper Township following a referendum held on April 30, 1884. It was reincorporated as a borough on March 31, 1890, and incorporated as a city on March 25, 1897.
The island is a seven-mile stretch of dunes and wetlands that was used by local Native Americans because of its abundant summer fishing. It was once owned by the Somers family and was known as Peck’s Beach, a name believed to refer to a whaler named John Peck who maintained a camp on the island.
On September 10, 1879, four Methodist ministers—Ezra B. Lake, James Lake, S. Wesley Lake, and William Burrell—selected the island as a place for a Christian retreat and camp meeting inspired by Ocean Grove. They organized the Ocean City Association, laid out streets and lots, and developed cottages, hotels, and businesses. The Ocean City Tabernacle became a center of the community’s religious tradition, and Ocean City’s origins continue to shape its family-oriented identity.
